Thematic Photographic 156 - Red

Meet Lucy.  Sure Iʻd like to say I took these photos while diving in some exotic locale but Iʻm an above the water kind of gal.   And Lucy here is a giant Pacific octopus living at the Seward Sea Life Center in Seward, Alaska.  Sheʻs HUGE!  Huge looking in the photos anyhow.

At the time of this photo, Lucyʻs bulbous head was only about the size of a small cantalope.  She was young.  Average size for her species full grown is 16ʻ total length and 110 pounds.  Theyʻre able to move up to 700 pounds with those strong arms!

It was mesmerizing to watch Lucy effortlessly maneuver over every square inch of her tank.  She never stopped moving.  All eight arms constantly reaching in different directions.  Her color would shift from a dull orange-red to deep or bright red if someone stepped near her tank wearing red.

  1. Well, it was a joy to meet Lucy! I couldn't figure out which one of her hands to shake, so I shook them all...

She wore her prettiest red, just for you. These shots are so detailed- they bring me right into the tank (almost).

  2. Hello Lucy. Great set of pictures, you kind of get a feeling for her movement scrolling through them. And one of the last things I expected to see for this theme was an octopus.

  3. Looking at Lucy would be enough to keep me an above-water kind of gal. Imagine meeting up with her in the depths. I think that made a movie about that...

  4. Super cool and neat photos but also absolutely horrific. It really grosses me out how you describe the head like a bulbous cantelope... I really hate octopus and one of the things I dislike the most about them is their heads - in fact you described it so well it made me a little queasy to think about. Anyway your post made me shudder with disgust the whole time I read it LOL :)

  5. Ha! Nona I was thinking of you as I wrote this one. I know how you can't stand gelatinous bulbous octopus heads. Thanks for stopping by and visiting Lucy.

  6. I'm blown away by this series, PJ! I know how hard it can be to track and capture moving targets in an aquarium. Yet you make it look easy. The texture and color in these shots is beyond divine. Absolutely brilliant!
